See Sully in IMAX or You Won't See the Big Picture

By Rachel Cericola

Are you planning to see Sully? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Clint Eastwood drama should be flying high this weekend, right to the top of the box office charts. Our editor Chris Boylan got an early look at it in IMAX and liked what he saw.

Some people will probably enjoy the movie more than others -- and we're not just talking about hard-core Tom Hanks fans versus casual ones. Instead, those of you seeing the movie in an IMAX theater will actually get to see more of the movie. The theater chain announced plans to show the film in an expanded 1.9:1 aspect ratio, which actually fills more of the screen, promising 26 percent more of the image over standard theaters.

Sully was filmed almost entirely with new Alexa IMAX 65mm cameras. The 2D digital camera was made through a joint partnership between IMAX and ARRI. It boasts the most lifelike images with vivid colors, fine details, and a higher dynamic range.

That's exactly the type of image you'd want for this type of movie. Sully is based on the true story of the "Miracle on the Hudson," an event that occurred on January 15, 2009, when US Airways Flight 1549 lost both engines after hitting a flock of geese during takeoff. With no other option, Captain Chesley Sullenberger made the decision to land the disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. Hanks stars in the title role, alongside Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney.

Sully opens in theaters on September 9, 2016. To find an IMAX theater in your area, check out the IMAX website.
