Samsung Unveils New 2012 Blu-ray Home Theater Systems and Surround Sound Bar

By Rachel Cericola

The annual Consumer Electronics Show is next week. This is when CE manufacturers come out to show off all of the electronics goodies for the new year. Samsung is giving a little tease, announcing three of the new products that they plan to display at the show.

First up is the HT-E6730W 7.1-Channel Blu-ray 3D Home Theater System. The 1330-watt system includes six speakers, a center channel, and a subwoofer. That speaker set includes two tower speakers with embedded height channel speakers and two surrounds -- which can be placed wirelessly, if needed. Of course, it also has a Blu-ray 3D player, which can play 3D and 2D Blu-rays and can upconvert standard-def DVDs, streaming video and even connected media devices.

The real hook on this model, however, is that it combines vacuum tubes and a digital amplifier into one unit. Vacuum tubes are an audiophile favorite. The HT-E6730W has Samsung's proprietary vacuum tube amplifier technology to deliver the goods and boasts an extra octave of sound without distortion. It also has Samsung's Crystal Amp Plus technology, which promises to protect speakers (and listeners!) from those jumps in volume. Other features include built-in WiFi, Facebook and Twitter integration, and a 3D surround sound effect.

Samsung's other home theater package is the HT-E5500W Wireless 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System. Like the HT-E6730W, the HT-E5500W has the built-in WiFi and the Crystal Amp Plus technology. There are no vacuum tubes on this one, and it's a 5.1 setup -- sort of. It promises a virtual 7.1-channel sound experience using technology that can analyze and amplify sound in the two rear speakers.

One nifty new feature is Samsung's new 3D Sound technology. This is said to sync the audio track of 3D content to match motion on the screen and adds vertical 3D sound effects for an even more immersive experience. Other highlights include Bluetooth support, BD Wise Plus, two HDMI 1.4a inputs, an Apple-certified iPod/iPhone dock, and the Disc to Digital feature for making personal DVDs into digital content.

Last, but most lean, is the HW-E550 Surround Sound Bar with 3D Depth Sound. This soundbar solution is pretty magical, since it can be placed horizontally below the TV or even split into two vertical speakers. The setup comes with a base for each of those two speakers, if you're looking for a 2.1-channel setup.

Other features include Smart Volume to control spikes in audio, six different audio settings (Movie, Game, Drama, Music, News and Sports), and the 3D Depth sound technology. It also has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output, a USB port, Audio Return Channel (ARC), and Bluetooth support.

"Consumers want to recreate the quality, immersive movie theater experience at home so that they may enjoy this at any time with family and friends," said Sangchul Lee, Samsung's senior vice president. "Samsung is already acknowledged as a leading manufacturer of home theater systems that offer pristine audio and fully immersive HD video. We've raised the bar even higher this year with improved immersive audio sounds and unmatched picture quality so that they now have even more choices to get the best entertainment experience across multiple devices."

Samsung has yet to announce pricing or availability on any of the products. That info should be coming during CES week, which runs from January 10-13, 2012.
