Samsung Packs Ultra High Quality Sound into 2017 Audio Products

By Rachel Cericola

CES 2017 is just a few days away. This is the event where we see all of the consumer electronics expected for the new year and beyond. There's so much to see (and hear), so it's pretty easy to get lost in the insanity.

Samsung Electronics is hoping to stand out by debuting new products now -- and packing them with something extra special. The company just announced three new audio products, each of which will include Ultra High Quality (UHQ) sound.

UHQ is a new proprietary technology, which promises to produce 32 bits of detailed sound from sources that typically provide between 8 and 24 bits. It basically upscales that audio and cranks out something that's clear and closer to the original recording than existing HD audio.

UHQ also includes something called "Distortion Cancelling" technology, which "reduces sound alterations by predicting the movement of internal speaker units in advance." This allows the speaker to deliver the most perfect sound possible. Samsung says it works particularly well on the woofer, which tends to output a powerful low-pitched sound with a movement bigger and more unpredictable than other speaker units. Rounding out the setup is a new "Wide-band Tweeter" that can widen the sweet spot in any room, as well as a new "Crystal Amplifier" for removing noise and delivering accurate sound.

Samsung will introduce UHQ in three new products. First up is the H7 Wireless Speaker, which combines the UHQ 32-bit audio technology with a bass response that can go down to 35Hz. That high-tech experience is packed into a compact enclosure with a metal finish and a retro exterior. It also has a control wheel, so users can adjust volume levels and pick playlists with ease.

Samsung is also putting UHQ into the MS750 Soundbar, which also happens to be the company's first soundbar to embed subwoofer performance directly into the primary unit. This not only makes the audio experience more complete, but keeps the room clutter to a minimum. Samsung makes no mention of Dolby Atmos or DTS:X audio formats, but says the MS750 can deliver immersive overhead sound via vertical tweeters and up-firing capabilities. Other features include a "one body" design, so the soundbar can be mounted onto the TV, with one designated power cable.

And finally, the new M9500 UHD Blu-ray Player will feature UHQ sound, as well as HDR support, Bluetooth streaming, and Samsung Smart Remote integration. Besides those perks and the ability to play 4K Blu-rays, this player has a new Private Cinema Mode, which can deliver stellar sound to any pair of Bluetooth headphones. Samsung plans to add mobile integration with a 360-degree feature to the M9500 sometime in 2017. The latter will allow users to check out photos and videos captured on any TV right through the UHD Blu-ray player.

Samsung has yet to announce additional specs, availability, or pricing for any of the new products. Hopefully they're just saving that for the show, which runs from January 5-8, 2017.
