SVS Reinvents SB13 Subwoofer with SB13-Ultra

By Enid Burns

SVS may not be well known but they've been an audiophile's and hobbyist's favorite for years.  Providing tight tuneful subwoofers that delve into the deepest octaves, SVS responds to the question, "How low can you go?" with the answer, "Really, really low." Now the company has rebuilt the popular SB13 subwoofer with new enhancements, and put it into an aesthetically pleasing compact housing that will go with - or disappear into any décor.

The engineers redesigned a number of the components of the 13.5-inch bass driver to deliver the SB13-Ultra. The compact, sealed enclosure has revised motor geometry, an ultra-high-power aluminum voice coil, and a custom gap extension plate that increases linear stroke and reduces distortion. SVS also designed the SB13-Ultra with dual linear-roll spiders, a stitched parabolic surround, and an ultra-light but rigid Rohacell composite cone material.

The new model offers an integrated 1000-Watt Sledge amplifier with peak power of 3,600 watts.  The amplifier's integrated DSP processing is matched to the driver and cabinet. It also has an equalization curve optimized for enhanced transient response, which complements room gain. The subwoofer is rated to deliver 20Hz to 60Hz - the very deepest bass sounds audible to the human ear.  Depending on the room and settings, it can reach all the way down to 15Hz while keeping nuanced textures and transient response clear.

A room-size compensation control allows the SB13-Ultra to sonically adapt to any room size. The subwoofer is built with a two-band parametric equalizer (PEQ) to appeal to audiophiles. For users who prefer to rely on bass management in a preamp or receiver, the feature can be easily disabled.

The sealed subwoofer comes with an attractive piano black finish. While it is stylish enough to display itself in any home theater, the 13.5-inch SB13-Ultra's compact size can also blend into most home settings.

"The SB13-Ultra subwoofer brings SVS's lauded Ultra performance to a form factor that's perfect for applications in which aesthetics are just as important as performance," said Gary acoubian, SVS president and managing partner.
