SONOS Unveils New Improved Play:5 Wireless Speaker and Room Placement Correction Software

By Rachel Cericola

SONOS has given us several different products that deliver whole-house music, all without the need for a wired mess. Now, they are looking to improve upon some of those options.

The company just announced Trueplay, a speaker-tuning software that will debut later this year in the brand new SONOS Play:5 smart speaker.

Most likely, you didn't buy or build your house based on its acoustical properties. Trueplay will allow you to tweak your SONOS speakers to make each one sound perfect wherever it's placed. And it can do that tweaking all at the press of a button.

Trueplay combines the SONOS app, the microphone on your iPhone or iPad, and a special tone emitted by your SONOS speaker. The app then analyzes how that sound reflects off of the walls, furniture, and any other surfaces in the room. From there, the app will tune the speaker to make the audio sound its absolute best.

If you move the speaker to another room, you can run Trueplay again. It's easy!

SONOS will launch Trueplay on the Play:1, Play:3 and Play:5 speakers, as well as iOS controllers. Other SONOS products are expected to get Trueplay perks over time.

If you don't want to wait, the new Play:5 speaker looks like a worthy purchase. Besides an improved wireless performance, the Play:5 has three mid-woofers that feature six synchronized, custom-designed drivers for mids and lows, with three woofers to handle the highs. Promising a wide soundstage, the SONOS Play:5 can fill the room with audio anywhere you place it. In addition to horizontal orientation as a stand-alone speaker, you can pair two Play:5 speakers together for stereo sound.

Other Play:5 features include new touch controls, smart sensors, and the ability to work with any speaker in the SONOS family. Of course, like all of those models, you can stream a wide variety of music services to the Play:5 speaker, including Pandora, Spotify, TIDAL, Google Play Music and Groove.

"Our remit at Sonos has evolved from constantly working to improve the general sound of all of our speakers to customizing them: first by room, and in the future, by person, activity and content," said record producer, composer, and Sonos sound experience leader Giles Martin. "We are obsessed with improving the home music experience, which must take into account acoustically unfriendly rooms. Tuning a room is the first of many software enhancements that make the experience richer and more personal for listeners whilst giving artists a whole new creative arena."

SONOS will start selling the Play:5 in custom matte black and matte white finishes sometime later this year. It's listed with an MSRP of $499.
