SONOS To Release Limited Edition Blue Note Play:1 Speaker with Exclusive Artist-Driven Playlists

By Rachel Cericola

Happy birthday, Blue Note Records! The jazz record label just turned 75 last year. To honor the occasion and mark the many years to come, SONOS is releasing its very first limited-edition speaker -- and it's extremely cool.

The SONOS PLAY:1 Blue Note Limited Edition has a unique, awesome finish on it. However, it's not just blue. The company used a combination of hand-painting techniques and robots to make a speaker that has a vertical fade from dark navy to cerulean blue.

This speaker doesn't just look cool, though. It acts pretty cool as well. Besides having all of the goodness you'd get from the typical SONOS PLAY:1, this limited-edition model also has access to an exclusive Blue Note radio station built right into the SONOS app. That basically means that this purchase will also include a year's worth of the Artists Selects station, which features hand-picked selections from greats such as Robert Glasper, Jose James, Terence Blanchard, Ambrose Akinmusire, Lionel Loueke, and Don Was -- who has picked 125 of his personal favorites.

Besides the Blue Note station, SONOS is also streaming Born in Blue and Blue Note 101, two radio stations that have been exclusive to SONOS listeners since last October.

"Music is meant to convey an emotional message to the listener. You don't want anything interfering with that message and SONOS shares Blue Note's dedication to this," said Was, Blue Note's president. "Fidelity is true. Give me the truth."

Of course, you don't have to be a jazz fan to snag one of these. The SONOS PLAY:1 Blue Note Limited Edition also has a 3.5-inch mid-woofer and tweeter, two Class D digital amplifiers, built-in wireless capabilities, and incredible sound. SONOS plans to start selling the PLAY:1 Blue Note Limited Edition in the coming weeks, with an MSRP of $250. Since the production run is rumored to be limited to about 4,100, you can expect these to go pretty fast.
