Paramount Releases First DTS:X Blu-ray Titles

By Rachel Cericola

We've seen (and heard) several Dolby Atmos Blu-rays over the past year or so. Now it looks like DTS is going to catch up by adding more to their immersive collection.

The company just announced an agreement with Paramount Home Media Distribution, which basically says that the studio will release several DTS:X-capable Blu-rays. The first titles were actually released earlier this year. That lineup includes the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy Daddy's Home, Zoolander No. 2 with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, and Tina Fey's Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. There's even a DTS:X-enhanced version of the critically acclaimed movie The Big Short, which stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt. All four of the new DTS:X releases (and several future ones) also include a DTS Headphone:X track through participating digital retailers. This promises the same immersive audio experience, but with headphones.

DTS:X is an object-based, multi-dimensional audio format. Like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X can deliver "the fluid movement of sound." That basically means that you can experience audio from every angle, including above. Of course, you will need a receiver or soundbar that can support the format. To date, Denon, Marantz, Sony, Trinnov, and Yamaha have all added DTS:X to select receiver models. According to DTS, we can expect to see Acurus, Anthem, ARCAM, Integra, Krell, McIntosh, Onkyo, Outlaw Audio, Pioneer, Steinway Lyngdorf, and Theta Digital/ATI add DTS:X support to existing receivers throughout the rest of the year, via various firmware upgrades. Yamaha is also planning a firmware update for its YSP-5600 soundbar before the end of the summer.

"Paramount continues to progress the entertainment experience for audiences at home," said Edward Hoxsie, senior VP of Worldwide Product Production & Fulfillment for Paramount Pictures. "Working with DTS, a leading contributor in sound innovation, allows us to deliver a great consumer experience with audio technology that enables the immersive audio our feature content deserves."

Paramount and DTS have yet to announce any upcoming titles. Stay tuned.
