One Day Deal: Logitech Harmony Universal Remotes Up to 38% Off

By Chris Boylan

Although some think that a universal remote control is optional (now that there are smart phone apps that do this kind of thing), we'd beg to differ. If you've got a moderately complicated audio/video system -- a receiver and speakers, maybe a Blu-ray Player, cable box and a streaming box -- an intuitive universal remote that can control all this gear is more than just a "nice-to-have." It's a must-have.

This point normally becomes obvious the first time you have guests over or a house or apartment-sitter who wants to watch TV. Trying to explain which remotes to use for what can get a little complicated. A cheat sheet is sometimes helpful (if unsightly) but it isn't ideal.

If you're looking for a single remote you can easily program to operate multiple components at the same time, you'll probably want to look at Logitech's Harmony line. They offer a combination of simple, intuitive remote controls with a robust application for iOS and Android that can turn your smart phone or tablet into a powerful graphically based universal remote.

And if you're in the market for such a device, today's your lucky day as Amazon is offering select Harmony remotes for up to 38% off. Here's a link to the sale page (valid today, December 8, 2014 only, while supplies last):

All three options include the Harmony Hub which allows you to control devices through walls or cabinet doors. They also come with simple but powerful button-based remotes that allow you to easily control multiple devices from one remote, plus access to the Harmony app so you can do the same thing from your phone or tablet. The remote uses RF or WiFi to connect to the hub and the hub fires out the Infrared (IR) commands to control your gear via a powerful IR blaster.  We have our Harmony hub at the back of our living room and it blasts out the commands to all of our gear without any problems.

If you just need to control A/V gear, then you can pick up the Harmony Smart Control for $79.99 (list price is $129.99). If you also want to control home automation products such as lighting, smart thermostats like a Nest, window shades or even smart electronic door locks, then get the Harmony Home Control (available in black or white) for $112.49 (25% off). Either way, you'll create a much simpler control system for your gear, and you'll finally be able to put that pile of remote controls in a drawer where they belong.
