Nuvyyo Creates Tablo Apps for Apple TV & LG Smart TVs

By Rachel Cericola

The idea of cord cutting just got a lot cooler. That's because at CES 2016 this week, Nuvyyo announced plans to launch Tablo apps for the Apple TV and select LG Smart TVs.

More specifically, the Tablo app will work with fourth-generation Apple TVs. When the two are combined, viewers can get live news, sports, and network broadcast TV, all with the new Apple TV interface. Users can also take advantage of the Apple TV's super-fast processor and voice-enabled remote while using the Tablo Over-the-Air (OTA) HDTV DVR. For instance, you can ask Siri to skip commercials before they appear on-screen! This spring, Apple TV users will be able to use the Tablo app to check out broadcast programming using both a live TV grid guide and recordings screens. Other features are expected in the near future as well.

Nuvyyo has yet to launch Tablo on any Smart TVs, so users with the LG webOS 2.0 operating system will be getting an exclusive. This will allow viewers to access all of Tablo's OTA TV content discovery, playback, and recording functions, all directly on the big screen. If you have a 2014 LG Smart TV with webOS 1.0, you are eligible for a free webOS 2.0 upgrade from LG. (There's no word on whether or not the app will work with newly announced LG webOS 3.0 TVs. We're working on getting an answer.)

To use one of the apps, you will need the Tablo OTA HDTV DVR. This little box is a network-attached live TV tuner and digital video recorder, which uses an indoor or outdoor antenna to pick up your local digital TV stations. Available in 2-tuner and 4-tuner versions, the device actually connects directly to your WiFi or network cable -- not the actual TV. Then, you can control the recording and playback of live TV using the app. Tablo apps are currently compatible with PCs, smartphones, tablets, and select media streamers (Roku, Amazon Fire TV or Android TV).

For the full Tablo experience, you will need a subscription to the company's optional guide data service. That's priced at $4.99 per month and $49.99 per year. You can also pop for a lifetime subscription for $149.99.

"Over the past year, we've expanded our portfolio to include apps for Amazon Fire TV and Android TV along with a completely redesigned Tablo channel for Roku," said Grant Hall, CEO at Nuvyyo, the makers of Tablo. "With Apple's September announcement of an app store for Apple TV, as well as LG's robust operating system for its newer generation of Smart TVs, we can now deliver Tablo's live TV experience to these popular devices."

Nuvyyo will launch both of the new Tablo apps this spring. You will be able to find each one on the Tablo website.
