New Philips 7000 Series Eco TVs Look Good While Saving the Earth

By Chris Chiarella

Combining snazzy style and environmental consciousness, P&F showcased their new Philips-branded Eco TV 7000 Series in New York City. The "Eco" handle refers to a host of Earth-friendly design choices, from the LED backlighting on down. These new models meet EnergyStar 4.0 guidelines, using 40 percent less energy than conventional CCFL LCDs.  Philips' proprietary dimming technology reduces power consumption even more, while enhancing the perceived contrast ratio. The ambient light sensor automatically measures the room's levels and adjusts the backlight for greater efficiency.

With screen sizes from 40 to 55 inches, the entire series includes a powersave mode rated at less than .02 watts in standby. Build-wise, the TVs are assembled from lead-free, mercury-free components and flame retardant materials, with 30 percent less plastic than the 2009 series. Even the packaging and printed materials contain post-consumer recycled content.

According to the manufacturer, the LED panel in the 7000 Series is capable of displaying 30 trillion colors, backed by the patented Perfect Pixel HD Engine for 120Hz video processing with the industry's fastest response time. Each pixel is enhanced to better match the surrounding pixels, resulting in a more natural image, as artifact and noise detection/reduction cleans and sharpens the picture. Philips' Perfect Natural Motion goes a step further, eliminating judder effects in DVD and Blu-ray Disc movies, while 24p True Cinema promises smooth motion performance superior even to that in a movie theater.

The 7700 collection specifically adds Video on Demand with built-in online streaming from Netflix, with Roxio CinemaNow and Blockbuster On Demand scheduled to come online this fall. For music fans, vTuner Internet radio is also integrated. And for the first time ever, Philips Media Connect technology allows the TV to become the ultimate media hub for the home, wirelessly linking a properly equipped PC with one of these new Media Connect-enabled models: Anything your computer can serve up, including HD video, now on the best TV in the house.

The new Philips 7000 Series TVs (like this one) boast a slimmer, rounded bezel for a distinctive look, on or off.

Consumers jonesing for improved TV audio performance will be happy to discover the SRS TruSurround HD option onboard, processing up to 6.1 audio channels for playback over the TV's four built-in speakers. When combined with Philips' unique invisible speaker system, the end result is mighty sound despite the slim form factor, with relatively deep bass response and clear dialogue. The space-efficient design is even more striking with this year's slim new bezel, 50 percent thinner than before.

In the top-end 7700 Series, the 40-inch 40 PFL 7705D has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,399, with the 46-inch 46 PFL 7705D coming in at $1,699 and the big-daddy 55-inch 55 PFL 7705D at $2,299. In the 7500 Series, which features the same screen sizes, the pricing is as follows: the 40 PFL 7505D at $1,199; the 46 PFL 7505D $1,499 and the 55 PFL 7505D $2,099. All models are either available now or are arriving this month.
