New Fox World Cinema Division to Showcase Festival Films

By Rachel Cericola

Twentieth Century Fox is branching out a bit. The studio just announced plans to launch a new label, titled Fox World Cinema. The new line will bring films from around the world under one umbrella, for distribution through DVD, Video On Demand and Digital Download channels in the U.S.

"Filmmakers around the world are creating provocative and entertaining films, many of which are rarely seen outside their native countries," says Mary Daily, executive VP of marketing of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. "With Fox Wold Cinema, we are committed to introducing these films to passionate audiences in America that are eager to embrace a range of cultures and experiences."

The label will kick off with Korea's The Yellow Sea, which is screening at Cannes later this month. The film, by acclaimed director Na Hong-jin, follows a man who is caught between rival gangs, all while facing murder charges. Also expect to see China's The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman, which made its debut at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival. Directed by Wu Ershan and presented by director and producer Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), this film is said to include an offbeat style to match its characters.

Rounding out the initial offering are two selections from the Venice Film Festival, Los Angeles Italian Film Festival and the London Italian Film Festival. India's cop thriller Dum Maaro Dum is from famous Bollywood director Rohan Sippy, and features Bollywood superstars Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu. Italy's Vallanzasca: Angel of Evil delivers the true story of infamous Milan gang leader Renato Vallanzasca. Directed by Michele Placido, the film just received eight nominations from the Italian Academy.

"Fox has always championed films that transcend language and social differences. In recent years, American audiences have embraced successful foreign films such as Pan's Labyrinth and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," said Sanford Panitch, president of Fox International Productions. "The universal themes represented with Fox Wold Cinema will be appreciated by film lovers everywhere."

After the initial launch, Fox Wold Cinema plans to introduce three or four new selections bi-annually. The new segment will work alongside Fox International Productions (FIP). FIP works to produce, co-finance, acquire and distribute foreign language films in key markets.
