Mohu Makes SkyHDTV OTA Antenna Available for Outdoor Use

By Rachel Cericola

We love our Game of Thrones, Louie, Homeland, Mad Men, and countless others on cable, but wow wee; pay TV can be pricey. It's actually become a bit of an extravagance -- one that many people can't justify these days. That's why so many have ditched pay TV in favor of good, old over-the-air (OTA) programming. Remember free TV? If not, Mohu would love to reacquaint you with the SkyHDTV.

By the same people that brought us the Leaf, the SkyHDTV is Mohu's first-ever outdoor/attic-mounted antenna. Instead of one of those bulky, rooftop products, this one sounds pretty easy to install. After all, the multidirectional antenna weighs in at a mere 3 pounds and measures about an inch thick.

However, the real perk is that the Sky promises free over-the-air broadcast television in full 1080p for the entire house! According to Mohu, it should be able to snag signals up to 60 miles away. Also, because it's multidirectional, you shouldn't have to tweak it too much to get the best signals.

"The Sky antenna is closely related to the mudflap antenna developed for covert, wide bandwidth, military communications by Mohu's parent company, GreenWave Scientific," said Mike Barts, Ph.D. and senior RF engineer at Mohu. "The Sky belongs to a class of ultra wideband antennas, which are inherently non-resonant and provide even performance over large frequency ranges. This is a big advantage for over-the-air (OTA) TV reception where the frequency range from high to low is more than 10 to 1. The Sky's performance is remarkably consistent across the channels and we are extremely proud of it."

Mohu has designed the Sky for outdoor use, although it's also small enough to mount in the attic. Other features include an integrated 15dB amplifier, CleanPeak filter technology, and dual power options (USB or power cube).

"The patent pending Sky is a variant of an antenna developed for Naval Surface Warfare special applications and has no similarities to any HDTV antenna products on the market," said Mark Buff, Ph.D. and Mohu's founder and president. "The design has inherent frequency independent properties, leading to optimized performance across the VHF and UHF bands. We take pride in the fact that all of our antenna products are original and highly innovative. We believe customers know great products when they see them and will be highly satisfied with the Sky's performance and unique style."

Mohu is shipping the SkyHDTV with a 30-foot cable and a mounting kit. It's available now, with an MSRP of $189.99.
