Mitsubishi 3D-A1 3D TV Adapter, 3DC-1000 3D Starter Pack to Ship in July

By Chris Boylan

In addition to announcing a new 75-inch model in the LaserVue line, the L75-A91, Mitsubishi is gathering press and analysts in New York City this week to announce pricing and availability of their 3D Starter Pack, the 3DC-1000 ($399, available in July). Similar to Samsung's 3D TV Starter Kit, Mitsubishi's package includes two pairs of active-shutter 3D eyewear, a 3D adapter (3DA-1) to allow current Mitsubishi sets to work with Blu-ray 3D players and other 3D devices and a Blu-ray 3D disc to show off 3D content to family and friends.

The Blu-ray 3D demo disc features a variety of 3D content including a crop of 3D trailers for movies such as A Christmas Carol, Alice In Wonderland and Toy Story 3. It also has an educational video all about 3D, presented by Lion King characters Timon and Pumba.  Mitsubishi also includes an HDMI cable in the box for hooking up the adapter to your compatible Mitsubishi TV.

But the central component of the kit is the 3DA-1 3D adapter and 3D emitter (with remote).  This converter box allows Mitsubishi 3D-ready TV owners to use modern 3D source components such as Blu-ray 3D players and 3D-capable set-top boxes with their existing 3D-Ready DLP and LaserVue TVs.  Although Mitsubishi never formally announced pricing before, speculation was that the adapter alone would be priced around $100, and that's what it ended up being (well, $99.99 to be precise).

Designed to work with all of the 3D-ready DLP TVs Mitsubishi has shipped since 2007 including 2010's 638 series and LaserVue 3D-ready TVs, the 3DA-1 will convert side-by-side, top-bottom, and frame-packing 3D signal formats as prescribed by HDMI 1.4a for display on all 3D-ready and 3D DLP Home Cinema TVs.  Despite earlier speculation, Mitsubishi reps tell us that the 3DA-1 is not intended to be compatible with Samsung's early 3D-enabled plasma and DLP TVs, also sold from 2007 to 2009.  Because Samsung models also use the checkerboard 3D format, some assumed the Mitsubishi adapter would work with the Samsung TVs.  More recent 3D TV models from Samsung (2010 model year and above) have no need for an adapter, as they already support all of the popular 3D formats used by Blu-ray 3D and broadcast 3D.

The Mitsubishi 3D Starter Pack will be available in July, at a price of $399.  It can be pre-ordered now from Amazon.com.  The 3DA-1 adapter ($99.99) can also be ordered separately.
