Big Picture Big Sound

MartinLogan Debuts Motion LX16 Bookshelf Speaker

By Rachel Cericola

We know that big sound can come in relatively small packages. However, now one of these relatively small packages features the highly regarded Folded Motion tweeter and other high-end loudspeaker technologies at an affordable price. MartinLogan is putting its patented loudspeaker tech into the Motion LX16, the company's newly announced bookshelf speaker.

As part of the Motion Series, the LX16 will get that advanced resolution Folded Motion tweeter, as well as a low-distortion 5.25-inch high-excursion woofer and a low-turbulence rear-firing bass port.

Look at the images of the speaker below and you'll see that MartinLogan makes it appear as though that perforated steel grille is floating in front of the 3/4-inch thick MDF cabinets. Underneath that grille, there's a black-anodized brushed aluminum baffle that sits flush with the cabinet to secure the drivers. The Folded Motion tweeters and woofers are blended with a topology crossover network that boasts polypropylene and low-DF electrolytic capacitors, custom wound inductors, and thermal and current protection.

The LX16 looks nice as well, wrapped in a thick wood cabinet that can be either high-gloss piano black or black cherrywood finish. That cherrywood finish also has deep cherry undertones that almost looks black in certain lighting conditions.

To make installation secure and simple, the Motion LX Series also has custom five-way binding posts.

MartinLogan is selling the Motion LX16 now for $799.95 per pair (MSRP). If you happen to catch the company on its Truth in Sound Tour, you may be one of the lucky winners to walk away with a free pair of Motion LX16 bookshelf speakers. Check the MartinLogan website for more details and tour stop information.
