Lionsgate Plans Francis Ford Coppola 5-Film Collection Blu-ray for December

By Rachel Cericola

Well, it looks like a few of you are going to have a very violent Christmas. Just a few days ago, Lionsgate announced plans to release the 10-disc Tarantino XX: 8-Film Collection box set. Now, the studio is planning another hearty, action-packed box, the Francis Ford Coppola 5-Film Collection.

Don't expect to find any horses' heads under your tree; this collection does not include any of the three Godfather movies. Instead, the 5-Film Collection includes two versions of Apocalypse Now, One From the Heart, Tetro, and The Conversation. The set will arrive on December 4, 2012, with a $39.99 MSRP.

Known to many as one of the greatest films of all time, Apocalypse Now is definitely one of Hollywood's most twisted movies about the Vietnam War. It finds Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) on a mission to assassinate the rogue Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando). The Collection includes the original version of the film, as well as Apocalypse Now Redux, which has a re-edited, re-mastered version of the film with 49 minutes of extra footage. That version also includes a Coppola commentary track.

The director received slightly more mixed reviews for the next film in the set, 1982's One From the Heart. Maybe that's because this film mixes Coppola with a musical theme. Teri Garr and Frederic Forrest star as a recently split couple, looking for romance with Raul Julia and Nastassja Kinski -- maybe. Despite the reception for the film, the soundtrack received plenty of accolades and an Oscar nomination for Tom Waits. This selection has a slew of extras, including a Coppola audio commentatry, four separate documentaries, deleted scenes, rehearsal footage, trailers, a variety of alternate tracks and demos from Waits, and more.

Next, the set skips ahead to 2009's Tetro. Despite a limited release, this film did very well with critics. It has Vincent Gallo (Buffalo '66) as the title character, who reunites with his brother (Alden Ehrenreich) in Italy. As far as special features, this one has Coppola sitting down for commentary with Ehrenreich, as well as a look behind the scenes, featurettes about the music, the choreography and the cinematogrpahy, and something called "The Rehearsal Process." There's also an extended version of the play within the movie, known as "Fausta: A Drama in Verse."

The last disc in the set flashes back to 1974 for The Conversation. Gene Hackman plays wire-tapper and super-spy Harry Caul, who gets caught up in one of his jobs. The film also stars Frederic Forrest, Harrison Ford and Robert Duvall. The Blu-ray includes an interview with Coppola and composer David Shire, screen tests for Ford and Williams, an on-set interview with Hackman, a few other featurettes, and separate audio commentaries for Coppola and editor Walter Murch.

All five of the films will include a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Apocalypse Now, Apocalypse Now Redux and Tetro will have a 2.35:1 image, with One From The Heart getting a 1.33:1 aspect ratio and The Conversation coming with a 1.78:1 transfer.
