LG Unveils U.S. Pricing, Availability for OLED Ultra HD TVS

By Rachel Cericola

Earlier this month, LG Electronics was at IFA in Berlin, talking up the company's new OLED Ultra HD TVs. Today, we're getting more information about those 77- and 65-inch models -- specifically, pricing and availability for the U.S. market.

Both the 77-inch 77EG9700 and the 65-inch 65EC9700 have LG's WRGB OLED technology, which means that each pixel is made up of four sub-pixels. That equals to about 33 million sub-pixels of lifelike color and detail! Each one also boasts killer black levels, all without backlighting.

Of course, each TV can display native 4K content, with the latest HDMI interface and H.265 decoding. It also has LG's Tru-4K Engine Pro, which uses a dual-chip, six-step process for upscaling HD content to 4K.

Both of the new sets will come packing plenty of perks, most notably the LG Smart TV+ webOS platform. This allows users to quickly flip from broadcast TV to streaming services to an external device. Everything is available via one click on the "launcher bar" menu. That includes recommendations, as well as services like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and more.

The 65-inch 65EC9700 has a 3840 x 2160 resolution, passive 3D, built-in Wi-Fi, and plenty of smart TV features.

The actual TVs are just as eye-popping as their images, with bezels that measure 4.5mm at their thinnest points. (In case you're trying to picture that, it's basically the depth of a few credit cards.) Each one also has LG's frameless, bezel-less "Cinema Screen" design, as well as a subtle curved screen.

"LG 4K OLED TV is a technological achievement that will set a new standard for the way consumers think of picture quality," said Tim Alessi, director of new product development for LG Electronics USA. "OLED on its own has already been hailed as the best screen technology on the market. Combining the stunning capabilities of this technology with the higher resolution of Ultra HD is a true game-changer -- it will reshape the industry and leave consumers simply amazed."

According to LG, both of the new 4K OLED TVs are wall-mountable or you can opt for the leaf-shaped stand.

The 65-inch 65EC9700 will start shipping in October, with an MSRP of $9,999. The 77-inch 77EG9700 will follow a month later for $24,999.
