LG Adds Channel Plus to 2016 Smart TVs

By Rachel Cericola

Wondering what to binge-watch next? LG TV owners are going to get a slew of new things to watch -- and it's all free.

LG is adding Channel Plus to the company's webOS platform. This streaming service offers free web-based content both live and on-demand. Powered by Xumo, the new addition will be available to 2016 LG Smart TVs with webOS 3.0. That lineup includes LG OLED and LG Super UHD TVs.

The unique thing about Channel Plus isn't just that it offers free content (although that is a nice bonus). The service is actually presented in the electronic program guide as TV channels, just like all of your regular, over-the-air channels. According to LG, if you have a set-top box, you can access Channel Plus content options by setting your input mode to Live TV or directly via the Channel Plus app. Also know that you will need a Wi-Fi connection to access any Channel Plus content.

Channel Plus also features on-screen widgets to make the experience more interactive. This allows users to see related content suggestions, as well as quickly and easily access channels and additional information.

"Channel Plus is a huge step forward in the evolution of Smart TV -- and only LG offers it. Users can enjoy nearly 50 quality content choices free of charge on their LG Smart TV, and with webOS 3.0, accessing them has never been simpler or faster," said David VanderWaal, vice president of marketing for LG Electronics USA. "By delivering premium Internet content seamlessly with broadcast channels together in the same channel lineup, LG aims to make it easier than ever for consumers to find and enjoy the content they want to watch in one centralized place -- whether it's streaming or broadcast."

Ready for more channel choices? LG will start rolling out the firmware update that will add Channel Plus to all 2016 LG Smart TVs with webOS 3.0 this month.
