High-Res Music Downloads See Solid Growth: Up 20% in Q1 at HDTracks

By Rachel Cericola

Is anyone really seeking inferior sound quality? Sometimes with digital audio, you don't have a choice. However, HDTracks is trying to change that -- and the company's efforts seem to be paying off.

HDtracks, the high-resolution digital download service, just announced a nice little jump in sales. According to recent numbers released by the company, the service has seen a 20-percent increase for first quarter of 2014, over the same time last year.

In other words, yes, people do care about sound quality, even when it comes to digital music downloads.

The company also says that it's not just one type of music fan seeking out better sound quality. The increase has been seen across a variety of genres. HDTracks specifically cites classic jazz, rock and contemporary pop albums contributing to the boost, thanks to the available DRM-free CD and DVD-Audio quality downloads.

It also helps that the service's catalog keeps growing. HDTracks just recently added three legendary Bob Dylan albums from the Columbia Records era, Blonde on Blonde, Bringing It All Back Home and Blood on the Tracks, as well as new digital downloads from popular artists such as Skrillex, Foster the People and Shakira. All of the new selections are available in 24-bit high-resolution audio. Music fans should expect to see additional new selections pop up on the site later this month from bands such as Cream, Blind Faith, Bonnie Raitt, Emmy Lou Harris and The B-52's.

Founded in 2008 by three-time Grammy nominee, record producer and musician, David Chesky, and his brother Norman, HDtracks typically offers selections in both 24/96- and 24/192-bit sampling rates.
