Hannspree Plays Around with Whale, Dinosaur and Pony HDTVs

By Peter Suciu

While many parents look to restrict TV time, there are just as many that don't mind giving the kids carte blanche to the remote. Besides educational programming, TV can calm, entertain, and even give mom a few minutes to do laundry. For the most part, it doesn't take much to hook viewers. Just in case, however, Hannspree has launched a line of Novelty TVs for kids of all ages.

These animal-themed sets offer a style that should fit better with tween and pre-tween decor. Hannspree has previously offered polar bears, panda bears and elephants with a tiny TV in their bellies. This year, the company is introducing a new tech-enhanced zoo crew, including a gorilla, whale, pony, and duck, as well as a dinosaur.

Besides adding a new characters, this year's lineup is slightly more tech savvy. The animals come equipped with HDTV sets this time around, complete with two HDMI inputs, along with options for composite, S-Video, RBG , RF and component.

If it looks like a duck, but has a TV for a wing, it's probably one of Hannspree's new novelty TVs.

The 19-inch display, which rests comfortably in the animal, offers a 1400x1900 resolution with a 16x10 ratio. Each one also boasts an anti-glare screen, along with a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. The animal sets feature twin 5-watt speakers, and even have a USB 2.0 flash drive port for playback of photos and music.

Hannspree doesn't want to alienate older consumers, though. For those who are just young at heart, the company has the new mid-century Lounge line, which features TVs with clean lines and brushed metal and details. These new sets are also part of the Novelty line, which has previously included TVsĀ  designed to look like baseballs and footballs.

Hannspree is toning down the novelty approach and offering the retro looking A-55W LCD HDTV.
