Big Picture Big Sound

GoldenEar Technology Ships SuperSub X Subwoofer

By Rachel Cericola

Earlier this year, GoldenEar Technology made a big splash at CES with the SuperSub X. The compact subwoofer is a smaller version of the popular SuperSub XXL, packing a big punch and patented technology into an enclosure that measures a mere 11.12-by-13.5-by-12.5 inches.

The new model features the 360-degree dual-plane inertially-balanced driver and sub-bass radiator topology that's become a staple of the SuperSub Series. It also has the lineup's thick, high density medite and high-gloss piano black lacquer.

Of course, what makes this model stand out is the sound that's produced from the compact cabinet. That's achieved with the patented combination of two 8-inch long-throw drivers in the horizontal plane and two 10.5-by-9.5-inch planar infrasonic radiators in the vertical plane.

And despite the small size, the SuperSub X packs some serious power. It has a 1400-watt Class D Digital Amplifier, which was originally developed for GoldenEar's Triton One tower speaker. There's also a 56-bit DSP device with a 192kHz sample rate. According to the company, the Programmable Logic State Machine was designed to manage important perks, such as frequency response (12Hz-200Hz), soft clipping, DC offset control, output-stage saturation control, discrete multi-band limiting, and phase-perfect equalization.

Also worth mentioning is that the amp has small, separate power supplies for each circuit section. This provides isolation and ensures there's little opportunity for coupling through the power supplies. Other features include two RCA inputs for LFE and low-level connections, as well as a precision level control and a phase perfect low-pass control.

"The goal was to create beautifully styled, finely finished, reasonably sized subwoofers that could generate very low frequency pressure waves of extremely high amplitude, while delivering accurate and precise low frequency performance that is both highly impactful and extremely musical," said the company's announcement.

GoldenEar Technology is shipping the SuperSub X now, priced at $1,249.
