Game of Thrones Seasons 1-4 to Get Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Releases

By Rachel Cericola

When choosing which House of Westeros suits you best, there will be some differences. However, I think we can all agree that better audio is a good thing. The people at HBO seem to think so as well, so they are re-releasing the first four seasons of Game of Thrones with better soundtracks for all.

The network just announced plans to release a series of new Steelbook Collectors Sets. Each individual season 1-4 set will include a brand-new Dolby Atmos audio track. This 3D-like sound format can add a new dimension to your listening experience. Additional speakers and an Atmos-capable receiver are required, but each disc will play on any existing system if you have yet to upgrade. However, an Atmos-capable setup can deliver sounds from above, so you can experience planes, helicopters, explosions---and dragons---flying overhead.

Each release will also include cover art by Elastic, the same team that created the acclaimed show's opening credits. All four seasons will also come with a removable and usable magnet featuring show-based artwork. Season 1 will have Winterfell on the cover of the disc and comes with a magnet with the direwolf sigil of House Stark. Season 2 has the Lannisters' sigil, with Season 3 packing a magnet with the House Frey sigil. Season 4 will come with the icy landscape of Castle Black and the Wall on the cover and a magnet with a crow and Jon Snow's Longclaw.

Game of Thrones is the first TV show to get a Dolby Atmos Blu-ray release. However, fans should know that aside from what's listed above, each of these sets will have no other new special features.

"In addition to all of the bonus content from the previous Blu-ray sets, the Game of Thrones Steelbook is the first TV-on-Blu-ray title to be released with the revolutionary new audio technology Dolby Atmos. The Blu-ray features a newly remixed Dolby Atmos soundtrack, which places and moves sounds and music anywhere in the room, including overhead, creating a captivating experience that brings entertainment alive all around the audience," HBO said in a statement. "With the new Steelbook set, fans can hear Daenerys's dragons swoop past them and feel the soaring score rise and fall around them."

HBO will release the Game of Thrones Season 1 and 2 Steelbook Collectors Sets on November 3, 2015, priced at $79.98 each. No release date has been scheduled yet for the remaining seasons, but each one is expected to follow soon after.

UPDATE: street dates of Season 3 and Season 4 are now available. Each is expected in stores and online on June 7, 2016.
