Endless Love Review

"Endless Love" is a remake of a 1981 film you've never heard of, starring Brooke Shields. This cheesy redo is likely to fade to black just as quickly.

Oh the woes of beautiful teenage Caucasians with 0% body fat. They have it so hard in real life, and even harder in this movie. Jade (Gabriella Wilde) got good grades in high school but was too busy studying to make any friends. David (Alex Pettyfer), a fellow student, watched her from afar but never found the right time to talk to her. After graduation, they finally meet, fall batshit in love, and want to spend as much time as possible together. The trouble is that she got accepted into Brown and only has a few weeks with him. It's just not fair!

So she blows off her summer pre-med internship to hang out more with David, much to the anger of her father (Bruce Greenfield). No parent would be happy with this news, but he is such a demonic character that he comes off as the irrational one. He just doesn't understand love, right, because he is cheating on his adoring wife (Joely Richardson) and he doesn't want his daughter to get tangled up in emotions when she has a degree to earn. When Jade and David emerge from a closet together during a party, he comes this close to going postal.

There is also a subplot about Jade's golden-boy brother who died of Cancer years before and how the family is reeling from it. That story was tiresome the first time it was mentioned and you better believe it comes up more than once. Also irritating is the fact that David has a rocky past but is really nice and misunderstood and stuff. He is a good kid who has a bright future ahead of him, if only he can be with Jade right this second.

Soapy and stupid describes "Endless Love" pretty well. It is one of those good bad movies, where it's hilarious when it's not supposed to be and you frequently laugh at its idiocy. But as a romantic story, it is a giant fail. This is in part because of Shana Feste's weak script/direction (she did "Country Strong," if that's a warning) but also because the leads are completely bland blanks.

Pettyfer poses like the English model he is, and Wilde poses as the English model she is. They bring nothing to the party besides their good looks and yearning glances. The most charismatic thing here is the lake house they go visit, and even that is probably embarrassed to be in this movie.
