Three More Blu-rays Get Dolby Atmos: American Sniper, Jupiter Ascending, The Gunman

By Chris Boylan

They say, "when it rains, it pours" and that appears to be true as far as Dolby Atmos is concerned. After a drought of new title announcements, we're getting word from Warner Bros and Universal that three of their big Q2 new title releases will feature a Dolby Atmos immersive soundtrack when they come to Blu-ray Disc this month and next.

Clint Eastwood's American Sniper will be the first title to hit stores, on May 19th. The Wachowski's SciFi epic Jupiter Ascending will be available in both 2D and 3D flavors on Blu-ray on June 2. And on June 30, The Gunman with Sean Penn and Javier Bardem, sets its sights on Blu-ray Disc. All will feature a Dolby TrueHD/Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

Warner kicked off their support of Dolby Atmos for home with a special edition release of Gravity on Blu-ray in March with a stunning Dolby Atmos surround sound track as well as other exclusive new extras. That set earned a 3.5 rating here at Big Picture Big Sound. It missed a perfect four stars only due to its lack of a 3D version of the film. "Jupiter Ascending" and "American Sniper" mark the first new release titles from Warner to be released in Atmos on Blu-ray.

Warner and Universal are keeping the Dolby Atmos train a-rolling with a trio of high profile titles coming to Blu-ray Disc in Dolby Atmos.

Universal's support of Dolby Atmos started off with Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken." "The Gunman" will be the studio's second Blu-ray release to feature a Dolby Atmos track.

We're looking forward to checking out all three once they're available.
