Disney, Pixar and Marvel Movies Come to Android Devices via Google Play

By Rachel Cericola

Back in February, Disney decided to ditch the typical digital copy format and launch its own service. Disney Movies Anywhere pretty much lives up to its name, allowing you to access your Disney, Pixar and Marvel digital movie collection almost anywhere.

Well, almost anywhere. When the service first launched, it was exclusive to iOS devices. Now, the House of Mouse is sharing a little digital love with Android users as well. A new partnership between Walt Disney Studios and Google Play will bring Disney Movies Anywhere to the Google Play Store effective immediately.

Disney Movies Anywhere is a cloud-based digital movie service where you can browse, purchase, manage, and watch movies from Disney, Pixar and Marvel. It works at home, with something like an Apple TV or Roku box, as well as through your iOS and Android devices when you're at home or on the go.

To get started, you just need to download the Disney Movies Anywhere app and connect it to your Google account. That's something you'll want to do soon, too. To celebrate the new format, Disney Movies Anywhere is offering a free digital copy of Wreck-It Ralph to new users for a limited time. (Sorry existing users; you need a new participating retailer account to get the freebie.)

Once connected, you can browse over 400 active digital titles, preview upcoming offers and even enjoy hours of free new and exclusive short-form content. The service will also make recommendations based on your preferences.

Also worth noting is that you don't have to use the service just for new purchases and teaser clips. When you buy Disney, Pixar and Marvel Blu-rays or DVDs, many come with a digital copy -- which can be redeemed through Disney Movies Anywhere. That allows you to tap into those purchases anywhere, without needing the actual disc. Users can even earn Disney Movie Rewards points towards future digital purchases!

"We want to make it easy for movie fans to enjoy all of their past and future digital purchases across all of their devices," said Jonathan Zepp, head of Google Play Movies partnerships. "Our partnership with Disney now gives Google Play users the ability to conveniently watch all of their Disney, Marvel and Pixar digital movies that have been purchased from any Disney Movies Anywhere participating retailer."

The Disney Movies Anywhere app is available now for free from Google Play and the iTunes App Store.
