Denon to Start Upgrading Receivers for DTS:X

By Rachel Cericola

This has been the year for in-your-face audio. Dolby Atmos has been popping up on more receivers (and Blu-ray discs), with the promise that DTS:X would soon follow. Denon Electronics is getting ready to fulfill that promise to users who purchased receivers from the company's 2015 lineup.

Denon just announced plans to add DTS:X support to three of its existing Network A/V Receivers. Like Dolby Atmos, this immersive audio format allows you to experience sound from almost every direction, including above. (For more information on the format, check out "DTS:X is Coming in 2015 and You're Going to Need a New Receiver.")

The AVR-X7200WA (and AVR-X7200W as well), the AVR-X6200W, and the AVR-X4200W will be the first three models to get Denon's free firmware update. Once the software is completely installed, each of these models will be able to run an Audyssey room-equalized DTS:X setup of up to 9.2 or even 11.2 channels (with the addition of an external 2-channel amplifier).

The DTS:X firmware update for the AVR-X7200W(A) will be released on January 28, 2016, with the AVR-X6200W and the AVR-X4200W getting the goods on February 18. Denon will continue to add support for the DTS:X format to additional products throughout the year. You will know it's time when a firmware update notification appears on your TV screen (assuming you have the Update Notification option turned on in your settings).

"The addition of DTS:X immersive audio will absolutely captivate Denon customers with its ability to simulate the real-world environment where sound is above, behind and in front of the viewer," said Brian Towne, executive vice president of DTS and president DTS Asia Pacific. "With a growing catalog of top Blu-ray titles and other content incorporating DTS:X, the home entertainment experience will never be the same."

The 7.2-channel AVR-X4200W is selling now, with an MSRP of $1,499. The 9.2-channel AVR-X6200W and AVR-X7200WA are also available now, priced at $2,199 and $2,999, respectively. For more details on each model, check out our 2015/2016 Buyer's Guide to Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Receivers.
