Denon Unveils New Flagship A/V Receiver (AVR-X5200W) with Dolby Atmos for $1999

By Rachel Cericola

Several companies have been announcing upcoming products that will include support for Dolby Atmos. Now, it's Denon's turn to take the Atmos-enhanced spotlight. This October, the company will add two receivers to its X Series. Both the AVR-X4100W and the AVR-X5200W will come packing support for Dolby's latest audio technology.

Of course, both of the receivers will also include all of the bells and whistles that you'd want in a new receiver, such as 4K support and upscaling and the ability to stream music right to the receiver without wires or add-ons.

However, the real hook here is that Dolby Atmos feature. Dolby Atmos is an audio format that can reproduce sound from just about every direction, including overhead. Although it was previously limited to specific movie theaters, Dolby is now bringing the format to home theater equipment. That way, you can actually have it sound like helicopters or birds are flying above your living room.

Denon's flagship model for the X Series will be the newly announced AVR-X5200W. This 9.2-channel receiver has a monolithic amplifier design and custom-made transistors that can crank 140 watts to each of its channels (8ohm, 20-20kHz, THD 0.05%). It even has decoders to deliver Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, as well as DTS Neo:X, Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz. When it comes to Atmos, it can do a 5.1.2, 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 setup. However, if you want to add in a 2-channel amp, this thing can actually go to 11 -- channels, that is. Yes, it can actually support 7.1.4 and 9.1.2 configurations, with the addition of a separate 2-channel power amplifier.

The wireless music streaming is available via AirPlay and DLNA, as well as Wi-Fi with a dual antenna and built-in Bluetooth. Other features include Audyssey DSX and DTS Neo:X 11.1ch processing, gold-plated terminals, and more.

Denon also plans to give the 7.2-channel AVR-X4100W several of the features mentioned above. However, this model will offer 125 watts per channel (8ohm, 20-20kHz, THD 0.05%), Audyssey DSX and DTS Neo:X 9.1ch processing, and the option to feed three sources in three zones. It can also do Dolby Atmos in the 5.1.2 configuration, or you can opt for 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 with an add-on 2-channel amp. Other features include eight HDMI inputs, three HDMI outputs, RS-232 control, and a phono input.

Denon will start selling the AVR-X4100W and the AVR-X5200W this October. The company has priced these receivers at $1,399 and $1,999, respectively.
