Denon Debuts 3 S-Series AV Receivers Under $600

By Rachel Cericola

Denon is beefing up its collection of AV receivers once again. However, instead of padding the lineup with expensive options, the company is making the latest in the S-Series extremely affordable.

All three of the newly announced receivers are priced under $600. That makes the AVR-S930H and the AVR-S730H stand out, because both also have support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound formats, as well as built-in HEOS wireless technology. The latter allows users to stream and control music from anywhere in the home using a Wi-Fi connection and the free HEOS app.

Both of these 7.2-channel receivers also have support for 4K Ultra HD content, Dolby Vision, High Dynamic Range (HDR), HDCP 2.2, BT.2020, Wide Color Gamut, and 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling. HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) will be added to each component via a future firmware update.

There are many similiarities between the two receivers, but what makes them so different is that the AVR-S930H boasts 185 watts per channel, with the AVR-S730H dropping that number to 165. The AVR-S930H also has seven HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs around the back, with another HDMI input on the front panel. The AVR-S730H has six HDMI inputs on the back, one on the front, and one output. Also worth mentioning is that the AVR-S930H packs in 4K upscaling and additional connectivity options.

Other features on both include Bluetooth, dual-band Wi-Fi, and AirPlay, as well as support for playing DSD (2.8/5.6MHz), FLAC, ALAC, and WAV files.

The least expensive AVR in the new lineup is the AVR-S530BT. This 5.2-channel receiver can support 4K, HDR, and Audio Channel Return (ARC). However, instead of all of the wireless perks mentioned above, this model has built-in Bluetooth so you can stream music from any connected smartphone, tablet, or computer. However, you can get it into that HEOS multiroom mix by combining this AVR with the HEOS Link pre-amp.

Promising 140 watts per channel, the AVR-S530BT also has an Auto Eco mode for adjusting power based on the volume level. Other features include five HDMI inputs (with HDCP 2.2 on three of those), 21:9 support, 3D video pass-through, and a front-panel USB port.

Denon plans to start shipping all three models in April 2017. Expect to see the AVR-S930H priced at $579, with the AVR-S730H coming in at $479. The AVR-S530BT will also be available around the same time, with an MSRP of $279.
