DTS Play-Fi Wireless Speakers Get Spotify in Latest Update

By Rachel Cericola

If you're looking for more music to crank through your Play-Fi speakers, DTS is ready to deliver. The audio company just announced plans to put Spotify into the DTS Play-Fi ecosystem.

That means you can now start streaming Spotify to all of the DTS Play-Fi speakers in your home, including ones made by Definitive Technology, Phorus, Polk Audio and Wren. It also means you now have over 30 million songs on-demand and at your fingertips.

However, it's important to note that you can't stream the freebie version of the service; it's an exclusive for Spotify Premium subscribers. So you'll have to pay the $9.99 monthly fee to stream these goodies. Besides being able to stream almost any song you can think of, subscribers can use the Spotify app as a controller for any Play-Fi speaker, which will instantly show up in the app, by the way. According to DTS, Spotify will also be available through all Play-Fi branded apps from DTS and its audio component partners.

DTS Play-Fi allows users to stream music wirelessly to Play-Fi-capable speakers from any smartphone, tablet or computer, using an existing WiFi network. No bridges or routers are needed. Even better, it allows you to mix and match speakers from different manufacturers. If it supports the Play-Fi platform, it can be part of one big multiroom music system.

"With its massive song library and more than one billion playlists created by users, Spotify is a significant addition to the Play-Fi ecosystem," said Dannie Lau, general manager of the Play-Fi Division at DTS. "We believe that Spotify users around the world will appreciate the superior sound quality and convenience of the Play-Fi audio experience for all of their music."

Currently, DTS is making Spotify streaming available to any one Play-Fi speaker made by Definitive Technology, Phorus, Polk Audio and Wren. The company plans to add multiroom functionality for Android and iOS users later this year. However, Play-Fi HD premium Windows software users can enjoy Spotify in multiple rooms on multiple speakers starting today.
