DISH Hopper DVR Gets An Upgrade for Binge Watchers and Channel Surfers

By Rachel Cericola

DISH Network subscribers have yet another reason to brag about the Hopper DVR -- three of them, actually.

The satellite provider just announced three new features for the Hopper, the award-winning, whole-house digital video recorder. Since the DVR first debuted back in 2012, it has received many accolades and upgrades. For instance, the Hopper with Sling came along a year later. Now, both of those hardware options are getting new perks.

First up is a nice little perk for channel surfers, known as "watch from the beginning." For instance, have you ever been channel surfing and come across a movie you've been dying to see or even a TV show, but it's half over? If the title is part of DISH's Video On Demand catalog, you'll instantly get the option to watch that program from the beginning. There's no need to search for future airings or wait days to watch it.

Next, because "binge watching" is now a thing, DISH is encouraging it with a new feature. Once you finish watching a previously recorded program or VOD selection, the Hopper will automatically and instantly deliver a TV pop-up, offering up to four subsequent episodes in that series that you can watch immediately. Of course, these need to be episodes on your DVR or in the VOD catalog.

And finally, closed captioning is now available at the touch of a button. This may not seem like a big deal, but sometimes you may be watching a reality TV show -- or any other show or movie, for that matter -- and you just can't make out that one line. Instead of rewinding and replaying it a hundred times, you can get a little on-screen help. Just touch the green button on your DISH remote to turn the closed captioning on or off. It's that easy!

Of course, the Hopper with Sling has plenty of other perks, including three satellite tuners and a 2TB hard drive, which can hold about 2,000 hours of recorded video. It also delivers the option to access the DVR in other rooms, via a smaller box, known as the Joey. Other perks include built-in Sling service, the PrimeTime Anytime and AutoHop features, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and more.
