Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore Blu-ray Review

By Rachel Cericola

The Film

It looks like Chris O'Donnell has finally found a film to wipe away the painful memories of Batman & Robin. Sadly, there's no codpiece or nipple suits in Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. However, it probably could have helped.

O'Donnell recently found success with the hit CBS show, NCIS: Los Angeles. That's a good thing, too. The guy is usually likeable. How he found himself tangled up in this ridiculous, unnecessary follow-up to 2001's Cats & Dogs is anyone's guess.

Yeah, we get it; cats hate dogs, cats can be downright evil, and cats seem to have an endless supply of modern technological devices.

However, that's not even close to the weirdest part of this movie. The outstanding question is how they convinced Bette Midler, Nick Nolte, James Marsden, Neil Patrick Harris, Katt Williams, and a slew of other stars to lend voices to this mess. Evil cat domination, indeed.

The Picture

This kitty has claws, fur and very sad eyes. The 1.85:1 transfer captures all of them well. Warner obviously put a bit of care into this image, which could be to distract you from the crapfest on-screen. Well, at least for a few seconds. There's a teeny bit of grain, but the overall presentation is pretty impressive. It also has its moments of haze and soft shots. That said, it has some nice colors and even the facial expressions on the animals (um, yeah) are as realistic as they can be.

The Sound

Apparently, animal spies like to build some suspense. This film's DTS-HD Master Audio track delivers the dialogue nicely, but a good portion of the movie keeps the surround noise under wraps. Once the movie takes off, so does the audio. Maybe that's to wake up the viewer? Mission accomplished.

The Extras

By far, the best extra feature on this set is the all-new Looney Tunes cartoon, "Coyote Falls." This is the same short that preceded the film in theaters, and it's just as funny and nostalgic at home. Frankly, it's better than the whole movie. Other than that, it's likely only the children will enjoy the extras in this set, which include gag reels, the "Animated Showdown," and a super-goofy, 9-minute behind-the-scenes look at how the animals were pampered on the set.

Final Thoughts

Only kids can truly appreciate the wit and whatever of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. That said, many of the "jokes" (notice the quotes) will go over their pretty little heads. If they can't follow the antics of these talking animals, will the Blu-ray help all that much?
