CES: VIZIO Gets Touchy with XRT100 Touchscreen Universal Remote Control

By Greg Robinson

To complement their new VIZIO Internet Apps ("VIA")-enabled HDTVs, VIZIO has introduced a sleek touchscreen remote control accessory, dubbed the XRT100. Although the device has been optimized for use with VIA-enabled displays, it can also be programmed to work with any legacy audio/video components you may have.

The XRT100 features a 3.5-inch color touchscreen LCD which provides for "one touch controls" to turn on all of your assorted home theater components. If your HDTV is one of VIZIO's VIA-enabled displays, the XRT100 can communicate with it using Bluetooth 2.0, thereby eliminating the line-of-sight requirements typically associated with infrared (IR) control.

Like the iPod and many handheld touchscreen devices, the XRT100 features an integrated motion sensor. When no motion is detected and the device is at rest, the touchscreen backlight will turn itself off to conserve power and prolong battery life.

Finally, it should be noted that consumers looking for a less glamorous alternative to the XRT100 may be interested in VIZIO's upcoming VUR9M universal remote. Due in March, this non-touchscreen model will offer backlighting on commonly-used buttons such as volume and the number keys while providing a soft, ergonomic grip. The VUR9M can control up to four devices and comes pre-loaded with an extensive IR code database for legacy gear.
