Lutron's RadioRA 2 Control System Does More, Does It Better for Less

By Chris Chiarella

As you can imagine, cutting-edge automation products are a hot commodity at a show like CEDIA Expo, which caters to the custom installers and their ilk. So when manufacturer Lutron Electronics introduces a state-of-the-art lighting control system like the RadioRA 2--which offers convenient, intuitive control of the lights, the shades, audio-video devices and even room temperature all, of course it's going to generate a lot of buzz. Successor to Radio RA, the industry's first two-way radio frequency (RF) system, RadioRA 2 represents several key improvements in this new generation.

Programming can be performed by the installer either at the PC or it can be done in a “walk-around” (in the field) mode. The new line also reflects a significant price reduction on almost all components of the system, versus their counterparts in the Radio RA line. (The first-gen RadioRA line will still be supported for existing customers, but not promoted for new projects.)

Many new components comprose the new RadioRA 2 line from Lutron, with the singular goal of creating the ultimate home automation esperience.

Perhaps best of all, RadioRA 2 hardware is scalable, from two to 200 supported devices, to provide single-room or whole-house control, everything for the automated home. One of the secrets is Lutron's recently-branded Clear Connect RF Technology, an interference-free channel for superior communication between keypads, sensors, repeaters, etc.
