Avatar Comes to Blu-ray… Again… but Still Not in 3D!

By Rachel Cericola

How's that copy of Avatar looking? A little worn? Hopefully the answer is yes, because another Blu-ray version of the biggest movie of all time is coming very soon.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment just announced the upcoming release of AVATAR Extended Collector's Edition. The new version, which has more special features and collectible packaging, will be coming on November 15, 2010.

The 3-disc release will come packing three versions of the film, but none are in 3D. Those who want to watch the movie in all its 3D glory will need to wait for the upcoming Avatar Blu-ray 3D Disc, coming later this year, which is expected to be a Panasonic exclusive at least for a limited time.

What you will get in the upcoming Extended Collector's Edition is the theatrical release, the Special Edition release, and a Collector's Extended Cut, which has 16 extra minutes in the movie, including an alternate opening sequence.

The first disc has all of the above versions of the movie, as well as theatrical and Special Edition editions with a family-friendly track. That basically means that little ones can enjoy the movie, with all of the "objectionable" language removed.

The second disc has an in-depth documentary titled, "Capturing Avatar." This includes interviews with James Cameron and Jon Landau, as well as cast and crew. This disc also has deleted movie scenes and a set of production materials.

The set's third disc has a production feature called Pandora's Box, as well as 17 other featurettes covering performance capture, scoring the film, 3D fusion camera, stunts, and much more. There's also an "Interactive Scene Deconstruction," which allows viewers to check out different stages of production through three different viewing modes. Other extras include "Avatar Archives," with the original script treatment, 300-page screenplay and the extensive Pandorapedia. This disc also has BD-Live functionality, which includes other bonus materials that have not been announced.

"I told our team --- let's do the ultimate box set of Avatar, with everything in it the fans could possibly want," said Cameron. "Everything worth putting into a special edition is in this set."

The AVATAR Extended Collection's Edition: 3-Disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray has an MSRP of $54.99.
