Amazon Go Gets Rid of Checkout Lines, Appeals to Closet Shoplifters Everywhere

By Rachel Cericola

Shopping online is extremely convenient. Most of your purchases are easy to find and you never have to deal with lines or angry customers. Of course, that doesn't work as well for something like a sandwich or impulse candy purchase.

Well, Amazon is looking to add the convenience of online shopping to your in-store purchases with Amazon Go. However, instead of compiling items into a shopping cart and getting into a checkout line, just log into the Amazon Go app, take the products you want, and go.

Although it may sound like a shoplifter's dream, know that the store uses something called "Just Walk Out technology," which can track when items have been removed from the shelves. Once you pick it up, it will put them into a virtual cart. Then, once you leave the store, Amazon will automatically charge your account and send you a receipt. Watch the video below to see exactly how it works:

Amazon Go was designed for items that you wouldn't buy online -- such as ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options. The company says you can also buy plenty of staple items, including bread and milk, as well as artisan cheeses and locally made chocolates. Amazon is even planning to offer Amazon Meal Kits, which packs everything you need to make a meal for two into one box or bag.

Currently, Amazon only has one Amazon Go store -- and it's in Seattle, located at 2131 7th Avenue, on the corner of 7th Avenue and Blanchard Street. It's also in beta right now, which means that only Amazon employees can shop there. Although there's no word on when and where other stores will pop up, that one shop is expected to open to the public in early 2017.
