Amazon Declares Prime Day 2016 to Be a Big Success

By Rachel Cericola

Did you get a Prime Day deal? If so, you're not alone. We know a lot of you were buying up TVs, headphones, and other electronic items. However, Amazon is also out there, proclaiming that yesterday's online event was the company's "biggest day ever."

More specifically, the company has said that the second coming of Prime Day was the biggest sales day in Amazon history. In fact, the company sold 50 percent more to U.S. shoppers over last year's Prime Day. (And 60 percent worldwide.) It was also the biggest day for Amazon-branded devices, including the Fire TV and Alexa-enabled devices. (Check out "Prime Day: Today is THE DAY to Buy Amazon Echo, Kindle, Fire TV and More" for more information on those deals.)

Amazon didn't talk dollars or say how many people signed up for the Prime service during the event. However, they were throwing around plenty of other numbers, including the following:

  • More than 90,000 TVs were purchased worldwide on Prime Day 2016.
  • It was the biggest day ever for Amazon Echo in the U.S.; up over 2.5x compared to previous record day.
  • U.S. shoppers purchased over 200,000 headphones.
  • The top three Prime Day deal titles purchased or rented in the U.S. were Deadpool, Kung Fu Panda 3, and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
  • Amazon devices were up over 3x in the U.S., compared to Prime Day last year.
  • The Fire TV Stick was Amazon's best-selling device globally.
  • On average, U.S. shoppers purchased one Alexa-exclusive deal per second during Prime Day using their voice.

"Prime itself is the best deal in the history of shopping, and Prime Day was created as a special benefit exclusively for our Prime members," said Greg Greeley, vice president of Amazon Prime. "We want to thank our tens of millions of members around the world for making this the biggest day in the history of Amazon. We hope you had as much fun as we did. After yesterday's results, we'll definitely be doing this again."

Amazon also says that plenty of small businesses benefitted from Prime Day. Many sellers offered deals to Prime members, which resulted in orders nearly triple year-over-year on Prime Day.

In addition to Prime Day benefits, Amazon Prime subscribers in the U.S. receive unlimited free 2-day shipping on over 30 million items every day, as well as same-day delivery on select items. Of course, Prime also includes access to tens of thousands of movies and TV shows through Prime Video, as well as Prime Music, Prime Photos, Kindle First, and other perks.

Amazon Prime offers a free 30-day trial for new members. After that, you can expect to pay $99 per year. The company also offers separate Prime Video and Prime monthly plans.
