4K Ultra HD Movies and TV Shows Come to Amazon Instant Video

By Rachel Cericola

Last month, we mentioned that Amazon would not be charging extra for Prime members to stream 4K Ultra HD content. Now, they can actually stream that content.

Amazon just announced that all of its customers now have access to 4K Ultra HD programming. This includes non-Prime users. If you have a 4K TV, you can enjoy movies, TV shows and Amazon originals, all in four times the resolution of full 1080p HD. All of the Ultra HD programming can be found through the Amazon Instant Video app on compatible Ultra HD smart TVs.

As mentioned, Amazon Prime customers will be able to access Ultra HD content with an existing membership, at no additional cost. A few of the 4K selections currently available include Amazon originals such as Alpha House, Transparent, and the new children's series, Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street. Amazon also has an exclusive streaming deal for the BBC thriller Orphan Black, which is also available now in Ultra HD.

Amazon plans to stream several other original programs in Ultra HD, including Mozart in the Jungle, Bosch, Hand of God, and The After and Red Oaks. Those will be available this year and next year. Another seven original shows will debut next year, with the option for viewing in 4K.

A few of the movie titles available to Prime customers include Sony classics, such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Funny Girl, Hitch and Philadelphia. The LG-sponsored Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek LIVE! concert is also available for streaming in 4K.

All Amazon customers can purchase select movies in 4K, with prices starting at $19.99. That lineup includes After Earth, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Elysium, Godzilla, Hancock, Moneyball, The Mask of Zorro, The Monuments Men, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Da Vinci Code, The Patriot, Think Like a Man Too, This Is the End, and many more.

"We want to deliver the best entertainment experience, and offering Ultra HD movies and TV shows raises the bar on quality and innovation that customers have come to expect from Amazon," said Michael Paull, VP of Amazon Digital Video. "We're also excited that Ultra HD is the latest benefit of the Amazon Prime membership, giving members instant access to great movies and TV shows in a premium picture resolution at no additional cost."
